Member’s Library Services

Since the formation of the Narrow Gauge Railway Society in 1951, a comprehensive research library has been built up mostly through the contribution of materials and research notes by our own membership.  The Society actively encourages donations of material by members.  The research library includes :

  • Published books, journals and periodicals (over 2,600 titles)
  • Manufacturers’ works drawings, records & catalogues (over 80,000 drawings)
  • Industrial & preservation site visit reports (over 300 files, covering the globe)
  • Maps, plans & timetables
  • Photographic archive
  • Film archive

A full up to date listing of the Society’s archive material is available on our website :

Some items are available for loan either by post, or in electronic format.

Postal loans are for a period of up to one month, the borrower reimbursing the cost of outward postage when the materials are returned.

Other items are non-loan, and may be inspected during one of the library’s pre-advertised open days.  These open days are advertised in “Narrow Gauge News”, on the Society’s Yahoo group, or on our Facebook page.

Our main library is located within the premises of the ‘Apedale Valley Light Railway’, Newcastle-Under-Lyme.  Members are encouraged to visit the library, either to browse the material or engage in serious research projects.

The Society publishes research work by members in our own journal “The Narrow Gauge”, these articles range from a few pages in length, to whole special issues!

The Society also maintains a photographic library, and a film library.

Contact details for our team of librarians can be found either on the Society website, or in “Narrow Gauge News”.

Any members with specific requirements are invited to contact the librarian by email or post, see below, who will be pleased to advise what relevant material is available.

Hope to see you in the library soon !
